Social media marketing allows small businesses to communicate directly with their prospects and customers. No filters. No interpreters. No one to inject “what they mean is [whatever].

This is just one of the benefits of social media.

Social media also provides an indirect benefit to your organic search results.

 

In various ways, Small businesses use social media to find leads.

Therefore, social media network provides an excellent channel to help your small businesses get found online.

Social media conversations for small businesses allows you to more easily interact with your audience, but as much as social media marketing is important to small business, if  done improperly, it may backfire.

This post focuses on the Dos and DONTs of social media marketing.

Dos

Select which social media platforms make the most sense for your type of business. B2B? LinkedIn probably makes more sense than Facebook. Visual products (food, jewelry)? Instagram and Pinterest probably makes more sense than LinkedIn.

Although most people disagree with me, Google+ always makes sense. This is due to how tightly Google has integrated Google+ with search. As more people realize this Google+ use will increase.

Get into social media marketing with a clear idea of what you plan to accomplish.

Give your small business a social media profile (or two or four).

Stay active on social media- Be there to answer questions, participate in discussions, and provide content on your social media accounts.

Don’ts

Don’t try to get into every social media platform. Getting into many platforms that you may not be able to manage is the same not having them.

Don’t get into social media without a clear plan- As a small business, you need to have a plan to direct you on the steps to follow

 

Social media marketing for small businesses is just one of the many online marketing strategies, all which which take time to be effective. Remember that it never happens in a day so you need to persist.
