Engage Customers in Dialog on Your Website

In addition to there being plenty of formats where you can engage your audience, there are also plenty of places your audience (customers, prospects, and others) can gather with you so you can get a better idea of what they want.

Examples are various social media sites:

  1. Facebook
  2. Twitter
  3. Pinterest
  4. Instagram
  5. Etc, etc

Why is it best to do this on YOUR website?

There are two reasons:

1) A forum on your website attracts user generated content and websites with user generated content are updated more often than sites without, and when the sites get busy they tend to rank very very high. I will this the Wikipedia effect. The more often a website is updated, the higher it ranks.

2) This is the one location on the Internet where you heavily influence the environment. By moderating discussions on your site, you see what is being said and when issues arise you can resolve them before they spread. A moderated discussion forum is the idea place to attract comments from the world at large to get a better sense of what your customers want.

What does it look like?

In the spirit of full disclosure, WordPress website user forum software is not as visually engaging as (for example) Facebook. By comparison it seems a little crude.

However that is a small price to pay for the SEO benefit you’ll obtain by NOT running your customer engagement discussions on Facebook.
