As a business working to generate leads, it is very important to get on the first page of Google.

91% of searchers do not go beyond the first page when sifting through search results.

How do you land on the first page of search results? Publish good stuff, and often.

But don’t neglect website images. They can make a difference on how you rank on reach results page.

Why are images important?

Because image search is a thing. People literally search for images.

For search engine optimization, written content is very important element to be found online. While content is important, images play a big role in getting your business be found online.

In additional to image searches being a thing, mages are important in that they help your readers understand your content even better.

Images on your site also encourages people to share your content more. People share interesting images.

How to rank first on Google images

If you’re trying to get noticed, the following are some of the practices to put into place with Google images.

Size

Make sure to use images with modest size to improve loading speed therefore increasing your search engine optimization rankings.

There are various WordPress image optimization plugins. You’ll want to use one.

File Name

Naming your image is one way of telling Google what the content of that image is and therefore provides that information to the person searching on the same. Image file names should be descriptive with the dash character “-” separating words.

For example:

modern-millennial-woman-with-dog-driving-ford-mustang

or

link-building-critical-to-SEO-content-marketing-success

Alt Attributes

Be accurate when describing your images as alt text are used as the accessibility channel to your image. Make your alt text less than 125 characters.

Bear in mind the alt text is not just a set of words strung together. It should be a descriptive sentence of the image, similar in idea to the file name.

From the perspective of how web pages load, when for whatever the reason the image will not load, the alt text is loaded instead. So while it does provide SEO value, the benefit of alt text is more than just SEO.

Captions

While captions provide zero SEO benefit, using captions makes your image more impactful for your viewer.

While optimizing your content is importance, remember to optimize your images for search engines also.
