Next to the title tag, the meta description is the first time an actual reader is seeing what you’ve written.

For your local SEO marketing effort, it is the first change you have to influence the reader, and what you want to influence that reader to do is to click on your page.

First I’ll explain what you say, then I’ll explain where you see it, then I’ll show where you set it.

Meta Description: What you say

Think of a meta description as a headline. It should be enticing enough to encourage the reader to read the article.

You should use some combination of statements and questions, where (if space permits) the last statement is some form of “click here now”.

Examples are:

  • Why are retrofit windows so much cheaper than other types? Click here to learn more.
  • Retrofit windows are MUCH cheaper than other types. Why? Click here to learn more.
  • Tennis lessons in Sunnyvale for people over 40? You found us. Click here for more information.
  • Looking for tennis lessons in Sunnyvale? We teach at XYZ park. For more info, click here.

Where do you set the meta description?

You set the meta description in your SEO plugin. In the example below the plugin being used is the All in One SEO Pack.

Where do you see the meta description?

You see the meta description in the SERP (Search Engine Result Page). Below is a screen shot of a SERP highlighting where you as a reader see the meta data.
