SERP stands for Search Engine Result Page

It is quite literally the result page that is returned to you by a search engine in response to a search query.

It consists of three main parts:

  1. Sponsored (paid) ads above the organic results.
  2. Sponsored ads to the right of the organic results.
  3. The organic results.

There are conflicting stories floating around the Internet about precise numbers, but there is consensus that paid ads are clicked at a much lower rate than the web pages which appear in the organic search results.
For that reason and others, achieving a high ranking in organic search results is of greater benefit to your business than presenting paid ads.
