Well formatted blog posts rank higher in search engines.

Why? Because when reading well formatted posts, people stay on the page longer.

Sample A

Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent a new nation, conceived in liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal. Now we are engaged in a great civil war, testing whether that nation, or any nation so conceived and so dedicated, can long endure. We are met on a great battlefield of that war. We have come to dedicate a portion of that field, as a final resting place for those who here gave their lives that that nation might live. White space.

Nothing more. Yet the use of white space make the post MUCH more readable.

Use whitespace

Something as simple as leaving blank links between very short paragraphs make it much easier to read on a screen.

Creating lists in WordPress is the same as other word editors. Put your list in bold (as appropriate) to improve readability of your blog post.

Bold text

For the main ideas that you wish to draw people to, use bold text to make them stand out and easy to find. Don’t overdue it.

Use quotes for quotes

WordPress provides an easy way to identify quotes. It makes your quotes visually pleasing. The WordPress quoting feature is used above in this post for the text of the Gettysburg Address.

SEO friendly titles

For SEO purposes titles should be 55 to 70 characters in length, contain as many “good” words as possible. For SEO purposes bad words are “a”, “the”, “or”, and the like. These words take up characters and provide zero SEO value. You must use these types of words, but strive to keep them to a minimum.

Use header tags

Search engines use header tags to pinpoint the main idea.

On your blog post tittle, use H1 tag and the main points of your post should be in H2 tags.

Don’t forget image titles, alt text, and descriptions

In search engines, images are searched for and therefore plays a role in search engine optimization.

By optimizing your post images, you make them more indexable and more findable.

Optimize your images by including image titles and alt text.

  • Title: this is the file name of the image on your WordPress site. It has SEO value.
  • Alt text: describes your image in plain English. One sentence, maybe two.
  • Description: provides extra information about your image. Should be about 150 words or so.
