The Problems with Small Business Marketing….

  • Are that you hear experts contradict each other.
  • Too many falsely pitch “the easy way” that doesn’t work.
  • Trial and error is expensive. Sometimes VERY expensive.

And the solution to small business marketing is simultaneously both simpler and more complex than what most people think.

It’s also not the answer most people looking for marketing companies for small businesses like to hear. The solution seems to contradict itself.

The solution is perseverance and testing.

Perseverance is staying the course until something works.

Testing is trying it, sticking with it, and abandoning it if it doesn’t.

This brings us to the important question which is…. how long do you try something before you decide that it either did or did not work?

A general rule of thumb is 6 months.

However is some form of marketing costs $1,500 per month, that’s a $9,000 test.

Since many small businesses simply can’t afford to experiment with that kind of money, you need to get creative and find ways to save cash in exchange for sweat equity.

You also need to find a way to target your message into the right audience.

Below is a link to an excellent article titled…

How Long Should You Test a Marketing Idea Before Giving Up?

The title is a bit misleading or at least it seemed so to me. I was expecting a short answer in the tone of “6 months” but instead it’s about shifting your perspective.

Her point is when it comes to marketing campaigns it’s often thecase that we build, measure, and learn.

The author’s point is when you learn, measure, and build you create more focused and targeted marketing messages, and shorten the time to realize results.
