I’m Kevin Carney of Inbound Marketing University.

Today’s Inbound Marketing Minute discusses the importance of publishing to the ranking of your website.

While it’s true that the technical aspects of SEO all need to be done well in order for your website to rank, having a relatively small static website where all of the SEO technical stuff is done perfectly well is probably not going to achieve a high ranking for the website.

Ranking your website today means you’ve got to become a publisher.

You’ve got to publish quality content at regular intervals for an extended period of time.

Um… quality means of interest and of use to the desired audience you want to attract, and the various technical aspects, the… um…. Doing keyword research and figuring out what keywords have the broadest reach with the least competition. Um… the SEO meta data, etc, etc there’s a… well there’s not a gazillion but there’s some 200 odd technical details.

But when you use WordPress 80 to 90 percent of them are simply taken care of on your behalf without you having to worry about the details of them.

And that frees you up to focus on publishing, which is the main point.

You have to think of your website as an online magazine serving your industry niche.

And potentially in whatever geography that you operate.

Let’s say that the extent of your geography is, oh I don’t know, Baltimore.

Well you would be the equivalent of those relatively skinny online magazine that talks about whatever it is, in Baltimore.

As compared to a more regional magazine or a national magazine.

But the main point is you’ve got to think of your website as an online magazine to which you publish stuff that is of interest, and most importantly of use to, the audience that you want to attract.
