It seems almost intuitive that “great content” is a nebulous concept. Hard to define definitively, but you’ll know it when you see it.
It turns out nothing could be further from the truth.
Having said that, there are people who just don’t get it. Here a link to a post that describes great content, but within a non searchable slide share of some sort. This may be one of the criteria of “great”, but a critical aspect of great is that it is FIND-ABLE.
So here is the Kevin Carney list of what makes great content great.
- There are two main aspects of great; great to a person, and great to a search engine. Great content strikes the balance between the two. It is written for a person, but with the knowledge that the search engine robot will bring people to it.
- Great content doesn’t stand alone. Great content is a web SITE, not a web page. It could be more than one website.
- The website consists of a lot of short articles, each of which is properly formatted for SEO, where each articles answers one question (when did you last find the answer to your question on page 3 of a long web page?).
- The information provided is useful and desirable.
When you follow the above guidelines, your content qualifies as great. Search engines will consider it to be authoritative and useful, and people will find it interesting and useful.
