Why Effective Social Media Marketing is a Mix of Networking and Promotion

Why Do So Few People Comment on Social Media Posts?

Maybe your circle of Facebook friends is different. Maybe I’m spending time on the wrong sites or in the group groups or communities.

But I see a lot of social media updates that no one ever likes or comments upon.

It sometimes feels like a business networking event where everyone is talking (and hopefully selling) and no one is listening.

If anyone has hard data on what percentage of social media updates do have ANY level of engagement vs what percentage have none, I would love to see it.

In the meantime I can only draw conclusions based on the data I do have.

The Pattern I Think I See

Most people want something from others, and don’t seem to understand the idea of being helpful first.

My mother probably taught me this, but I’ve always believed the best way to make a friend is to be a friend.

Promotion is Not Networking

And when you’re excessively promotional, people tune you out. It is not just similar to a business mixer where everyone is selling and no one is really listening, it’s exactly that, only magnified by the power of the Internet.

What Works?

Identify influential people online who can help connect you into their communities, and be of service to these people. Maybe write a blog post for their site, promote stuff they say to your social media connections, or introduce them to someone you think they would benefit from knowing.

Start small. Work your way into their good graces over time.

You’ll know when the time is right to ask a favor, and if they turn out to be people who take, and take, and never return the favor, cut your losses when you realize this and move on.

Establishing deep relations online with a few influential people can be enormously more valuable than continuing to post updates to social media sites that people ignore.
