The discussion of the importance of blogging to SEO can now cease.

Robert Ryan, an SEO consultant in Ireland, conducted an experiment whose conclusion is definitive.

In summary…. he built up a website to a health level of traffic. He then stopped blogging for 251 days (8 months and 7 days) then compared traffic levels to before he stopped blogging, and 251 days after he stopped.

The results:

  • Overall traffic declined 32%
  • Organic search traffic declined 42%

While no one credible denies the technical aspects of SEO have to be done right, when you use WordPress, make the needed settings and install the needed plugins, that stuff is simply taken care of on your behalf.

What’s left is the regular and consistent publishing of fresh content to your website. What we call “blogging”.

But the funny thing is, even among people who know the importance of blogging to SEO, many people still do it wrong: some ignore the needed WordPress setup, some create crappy titles, some never link to others, while others focus on a set of blog post topics that is too narrow.
