Before I give you my statement of what defining characteristic of what Inbound Marketing is, let me share with you my statement of the defining characteristic of what 0utbound marketing is.
Outbound marketing is what a business sends their advertising message out into a large population of people with the knowledge that most people who see the message do not care. They are either not interested in buying now, or they are not interested in buying ever. However, this is the dominate form of advertising that was created to allow commercialization of the once new technology of radio (did you know that is when mass marketing was invented?).

Inbound Marketing is exactly the opposite. You do not send your advertising message anywhere. You “simply” publish a lot of useful and relevant content to your website, thereby making it easier for your prospective clients to find you.
So the defining characteristic of Inbound Marketing is before your future customers even meet you, you know they have an interest in your products or services because if they did not, they would never have found you in the first place.
