It’s useful to think of what are called Black Hat SEO and Grey Hat SEO as speeding.

If one person goes a little faster than the posted speed limit, the odds of getting a ticket are slim. When everyone starts to travel significantly faster than the posted speed limit, the cops setup a speed trap to catch lots of speeders to get everyone to slow down again.

Think for a minute about what the Googlebot does and does not do. It does not “read”, “think”, “understanding”, do contain any cognitive abilities. It does large scale statistical analysis and pattern recognition.

Back to the question…..

Grey hat SEO techniques are a deviation from tried and true white hat SEO techniques, but are not blatantly against the published Google webmaster quality guidelines.

If you’ve discovered some way to game the system and artificially increase the ranking of your website and no one else on the entire Internet is doing it, it’s probably very safe.

On the other hand, as millions of people learn of it also and start implementing it, it will eventually come to the attention of the Google webspam team and will eventually make it onto their list of tricks to render ineffective.

So whether a grey hat technique will ever cause your website ranking to suffer depends mostly upon how wide spread it’s use is and how far outside the Google webmaster quality guidelines it is.

I recommend playing it safe and actually striving to provide interesting and useful content for your desired audience that people want to share and link to.

If you discover a good trick, it’s a safe bet others will to and Google will one day undo it’s effectiveness.

While grey hat SEO techniques may look like they’ll save you time, if they become too widespread they’ll one day be undone.

Publishing is the key to SEO success, not tricks.
