Long tail keyword phrases make it easier to rank for keyword phrases with lower search volumes.

What Are Long Tail Keywords and How Do They Help Your Content Marketing?

But First, What Are Keywords

Since you probably know, this is just a quick summary.

Keywords are nothing more (or less) than words you use a lot on your webpage.

Notice I said webpage, not post – I’ll explain later why.

When a word or phrase appears with a “density” of 2% or higher (which means for every 100 words it appears at least twice), it’s a keyword.

However the reality is people don’t search for single words. The vast majority of Internet searches are 3 and 4 words long.

These are called “keyword phrases”.

What Are Long Tail Keywords

Long tail keyword phrases are keyword phrases that are AT LEAST three words long.

That’s it.

Why Are Long Tail Keywords Important?

Because you’ll rank for long tail keyword phrases quicker.

If you want to rank high for “coffee”, you need to outrank Starbucks. Good luck with that!

On the other hand, if you want to rank high for “types of coffee”, you’ll have a much easier time. Believe it or not, that is a “low competition” phrase (per Google Adwords Keyword Planner Tool). What makes it low competition is relatively few websites rank for it.

So the trade off with long tail keywords are:

  • Its’ easier for you to rank for them quicker.
  • The audience who searches for them is much smaller.

What Do You Do With Long Tail Keywords?

Rank for a bunch of them.

Per a report I just ran in Google Adwords Keyword Planner, the following phrases are high traffic and low competition:

  • types of coffee
  • coffee culture (I’m surprised by this one)
  • how to make iced coffee
  • iced coffee recipe
  • blue bottle coffee (very high search volume too)
  • coffee enema (also very high search volume – black? cream? sugar? Inquiring minds want to know!)
  • mcdonalds free coffee (really? free coffee at McDonald’s?)

Anyway, you then use those phrases in your blog posts at the appropriate density (around 2%) to make them keyword phrases.

Ranking for lots and lots of keyword phrases will over time attract a very large audience of your website.
