Using Expert Interviews to Grow Your Website and Blog Traffic Audience

This is continued from a prior post that provided examples of things that used to work, but do no longer.

This next bit things is expert interviews.

Expert Interviews

As the name implies, expert interviews are interviews with topic or industry experts.

Their purpose is as follows:

  1. Establish your website as authoritative by providing views and perspectives of people already considered to be worth listening to.
  2. Attract back links.

That last one is not less important than the first. The popularity content aspect of the Google website ranking is as important today as it was when Google first appeared as a better search engine.

What is Page Rank?

Page Rank is the name of the popularity contest aspect of how Google ranks web pages (note that Google ranks pages, not sites, but pages on sites with lots of pages rank higher).

Page Rank is a system of voting where the “score” of a page is determined by the links coming into (or onto) that page. When a high authority site links to one of your pages, that page obtains a portion of that high authority. When one of your pages contains a link to a page on some other site, a portion of your pages authority is given to that other site.

Page Rank is why back links matter.

How Do Expert Interviews Increase Page Rank?

By themselves they don’t and they are not guaranteed to.

However, we all like being recognized as an expert. If someone requested an interview with you as you’re an expert in your field, would you not feel appreciation and grant the interview? Once the interview is published on their site, would you like link to it?

That is how these interviews increase page rank.

A single back link to a single interview is not enough, but if you do one or maybe two a week, over time the effect will be significant.

Will This Ever be Abused?

Probably one day, so make sure you work with respected people in your industry and not just anyone. The single best strategy to ensure your expert interviews are quality is if anyone ever asks you for payment in exchange for an expert interview, don’t do it. That is slippery slope where good ideas become spammy practices over time.
