Why is Video Important to Inbound Marketing?
Everyone repeats this, yet many people I talk to do not have a clear idea as to why.
Hence this post. I hope to provide clarify.
Video is NOT Part of SEO, per se
Let me be very clear on that.
SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization, and videos on your website does not improve the search engines ability to find the webpages on your website.
Why? Because videos are not formatted for search. What Google and the other search engines index is text, so a video is searchable when the voice to text is really good, and while it’s getting better, it’s not yet really good. Additionally if your video has background music, the background music must be filtered out by the software doing the speech to text conversion. While this capability is getting better, we’re not there yet.
How do you make a video SEO friendly? You describe it, using written words.
When you use video in your blog posts, you want to include the video transcription in the blog post. Video transcriptions are easily searched by the search engine spiders. The videos themselves are not.
What About YouTube?
YouTube does not contradict anything I’ve said above. That is why YouTube provides you space to describe your videos and why people do so.
Having said that YouTube is the second most used search engine on the planet, so publishing videos to YouTube makes sense, just make sure to describe them in words as well.
Video is Important for Conversion
Video does NOT help your web page be found better, but many of us prefer to take in information via video than via reading.
Video is also a good way to share very detailed information about a sequence of events, whether it be how to properly format a post for SEO via a screen capture video or how to rebuild a toilet via a watch someone do it video.
I had a client who was a motivational speaker. We came to realize that when a website visitors watched his demo video (a video of him on stage speaking) his conversion rate improved dramatically.
When you think about it, that makes sense. They had a chance to see him in action, then reached out to discuss the possibility of him speaking at their event.
