The Long Tail
The long tail is a viable SEO strategy as well as a viable business strategy.
I know I get a bit repetitive with certain main themes. I do that because they’re important. Perhaps I feel if I say them again and again and again, more people will hear me.
When I find someone on the blogosphere who agrees with something I believe to be a core principal, it increases my desire to share (again). Today it’s Marieke van de Rakt of Yoast, who recently published a post titled Why Focus on Long Tail Keywords?
Please read her post in full. Mine simply summarizes the main concepts.
The long tail is an important concept for both Inbound Marketing AND business in general. This is because the purpose of Inbound Marketing is to help you sell stuff.
If you want to sell coffee, can you go head to head with Starbucks? No. To be successful in selling coffee, you need to find a niche the big brands are ignoring, and specialize in it.
Specialization is the key to success.
Starbucks sells a lot of coffee and they have established distribution and sales channels appealing to the mass market. They sell a number of varieties, but if there are coffee variants that have a small but loyal following, Starbucks doesn’t sell them. What they sell appeals to the masses. Their entire business and supply chain is tuned to provide what is wanted by the largest possible audience.
The niches they don’t service is where your opportunities lie.
This is how you take advantage of the long tail. You focus on the niches where you can sell into the smaller more loyal audiences.
Those areas of specialization on which you build your business is also the areas of specialization on which you build your website.
