Successful Lead Generation through Content Marketing in One Easy Step

Yes, the title is intentionally misleading. Content Marketing can not be done in one easy step.

Having said that, the very first and some say the most important step, is conceptually easy.

That step is committing to the effort.

Everyone Wants the Shortcut to be Shorter

Inbound marketing is simultaneously easier and harder than most people think.

It’s easier in as much as the basic set of activities is not hard to do.

It’s harder in as much as someone has to devote themselves to the tasks, spend an hour or two a day, and stay with it for months and months. What makes the hard part a bit harder is no one can be absolutely certain how many months. It’s one of those things that you stay with until it fully kicks in.

What it Really Takes

In a word, publishing.

Publishing useful information to your website. Information that allows your prospects to learn things, to do things, and to find things.

Good Inbound Marketing content is not conceptually different from other content, but the focus needs to be on utility, rather than entertainment.

If you’re selling mortgages, a mortgage calculator app on your website would be very useful.

If you’re selling dog training services, some basic dog training instructional videos would be useful, as well as maybe a Q&A forum on your website (of course you have to tactfully find a way to say “the answer is to buy XYZ”).

If you’re selling exotic teas, instructions on how to prepare them (potentially including how to videos) would be useful.

You get the idea.

The Value of Joining a Community

Yet, publishing quality information is not enough. One of the strange dynamics of SEO is being found helps you be found more.

While “just” publishing will get you found in time, who has extra time to wait? Let’s kickstart the experience for each other by literally doing things which tells the search engines we have “found” each other.

Specifically, what things?

  1. Link to each others posts.
  2. Comment upon each other’s blog posts.
  3. Share each others blog posts via social media, especially Google+.

This doesn’t allow you to publish only a little or to publish crap, but it does get you found faster.
