small business marketing, customer acquisition

Small Businesses Acknowledge that Customers Are Critical to Their Success

Really? Businesses Need Customers?

The title of this post is the actual first part of the opening sentence of an article published on emarketer.com titled “How Can Small Businesses Get, and Keep, Clients?“.

The sentence goes on to say “48% of small-business owners (SBOs) worldwide said their customers drove their success”.

I wonder what the other 52% believe drives their success?

Constant Contact conducted a survey of some sort asking small business owners what their major concerns about.

The top three responses were:

  • Finding new customers (66%)
  • Having enough time (55%)
  • Retaining existing customers (40%)

My initial reaction to their article was “I wonder who doesn’t know this?”. It’s not like businesses living and dying on having enough customers is some sort of secret. We live in a consumer based economy where GDP growth depends on there being enough customers.

But what is most interesting (to me at least) is the tug of war between priority #1 and priority #2.

Our businesses need more customers, but the demands of our time require we spend time and energy away from marketing and sales.

Is there a way to invest a relatively small amount of time and effort, and have it generate a huge number of qualified leads?

If you’re willing to be patient, there is.

It’s the power of Inbound Marketing, sometimes called Content Marketing, sometimes called Brand Publishing, and sometimes called Brand Journalism.

It takes time to work, but it works.
