small business marketing strategy, who is your competition

Small Business Marketing Strategy Question: Who is Your Competition?

Who is YOUR Competition?

When you don’t know who your competition is, you don’t know what makes you better. And if you don’t know, you can’t tell others.

You should have by now answered the following questions:

Once you’ve got those down, the next important questions are: 1) who is your competition, and 2) what makes you better?

To illustrate this point I’ll use this business as an example.

Inbound Marketing University: Why? What? Who?

First, let me quickly answer the three questions above.

Why does Inbound Marketing University Exit?

To bring the audience gathering and lead generating power of Inbound Marketing to small businesses and early stage startups who simply can not afford to hire a quality agency.

We are working to level the playing field so small businesses can make use of an incredible tool they can’t otherwise afford.

What does Inbound Marketing University Sell?

At face value, we sell Inbound Marketing training. What we really sell is business transformation through thought leadership, community engagement, and lead generation.

Who does Inbound Marketing University Sell To?

Owners of small businesses and the marketing person within small businesses and early stage startups who understand the value of paying for something mostly with sweat equity.

Inbound Marketing University: Who is Our Competition?

Our #1 competitor is THE 800 pound gorilla in the Inbound Marketing industry, and now that HubSpot has gone public, they have so much money available to them they could easily crush us. So what makes us different?

HubSpot

HubSpot sells an Inbound Marketing toolset and provides training for free. Their training teaches you how to use their toolset. Although HubSpot does have a $200 a month option, it’s so limited as to be impractical for even the smallest of businesses. The next cheapest HubSpot package is $800 a month, which you pay as long as you use their toolset.

Why are we better than HubSpot?

We teach you how to get results for much less. We charge a monthly subscription of $47 which provides access to our online lessons, our online forums, and our weekly coaching sessions.

MasterInbound

MasterInbound also sells Inbound Marketing training. Their website contains no pricing.

Why are we better than MasterInbound?

Our students get results. The website for MasterInbound does not contain a single customer testimonial.

Various HubSpot Resellers

And there are a lot of them, but they are all HubSpot for all practical purposes.

Back to… Who is YOUR Competition?

If you’re not sure, find out. Do some research. You need to know why you’re better and if you’re not better today, you need to know what you do to become better.
