Running a small business is tough. You’ve got to perform a lot of different roles. You’ve got to be flexible. You’ve got to understand the barriers to your success and how to overcome them.

#1 among small business challenges is generating sufficient leads to obtain sufficient sales.

Remember that even the most successful small business face through some marketing challenges.

So what are these challenges to small businesses?

Effective marketing automation for small businesses

You need to think through your marketing strategy and how you will use the various channels available to you.

It is really difficult for small businesses to automate its strategy if there is no effective marketing strategy in place.

It’s not enough to understand your goals. You also need to understand the tasks and activities needed to obtain those goals.

A sales trainer named Eric Loftholm calls this “the track you run on”. That’s a good metaphor.

Sale and marketing affiliation

Your marketing efforts (whose purpose is lead generation) and your sales efforts (whose purpose is to close leads) work best when they work together.

The best thing to make this relationship work for your small business is understanding your customers.

It’s important to understand what problems and issues your prospects face, what they need in terms of help, and what decisions they go through in the course of becoming your customer.

Data collection

The main point here is to have a single database in which you capture EVERY lead and can track contacts with each lead.

From there contact information can be moved to other systems that has specific purposes.

For us, we capture all leads into a marketing automation system named Mautic, and Mautic provides mechanisms for us to “push” leads into both Mailchimp (for our weekly email tip) and Hubspot CRM (for tracking of lead contacts and followup).

If you’re collecting lead information via forms on your website, ask for as little information as you need to start nurturing the lead, as the more information you ask for the fewer people fill out your forms.
