In this article I discuss two.
Myth: It is necessary to use your desired keyword phrase multiple times in the article or story.
Once upon a time (about 18 months ago or so), it was common practice to keyword stuff the articles and stores you published.
For example, if you wished to rank for the specific term “successful local SEO“, you would use that exact phrase twice per every 100 words in your article. If the article was 400 words long, that phrase would then appear eight times.
Although this technique used to work, it caused us to write posts that were not in a natural writing style. They were “keyword stuffed” for the benefit of the search engine robots, which detracted from the quality of the articles to the people who found and read them.
The modern myth is that keyword stuffing still works.
It does not.
The beginning of the end of keyword stuffing was the Google algorithm update named Hummingbird, which first rolled out 16 months ago.
Manipulative Backlink Building
Myth: Every backlink helps.
The algorithm update that filters out web pages which contain a lot of SPAM back links is called Penguin.
Penguin was first rolled out almost 3 years ago. There have been a total of 6 major Penguin updates in that time.
While PageRank is still one of the most important search signals, with the Penguin algorithm update the quality of each link matters much more.
Now, not only is it true that not every link helps your search ranking, many forms of links (which are designated as SPAM) hurt severly.
