When your business has a service area and you need to generate leads within a specific geographic area, how do you localize your SEO efforts to do this?

Believe it or not, it’s mostly (not exclusively, but mostly) a matter of using the names of the areas in your online content.

You go through a process of determining what location names make the most sense, and use them repeatedly in the content you publish. Not in a spammy way, but in a way that fits into the content you’re publishing.

Zippe.biz provides Local SEO Marketing training, consulting, and implementation.

Some amount of analysis is required to determine what location names make sense (you can use Google Adwords Keyword Tool for this).

We are located in the greater San Jose, CA metro area, so for us, the following names are meaningful:

  • San Jose
  • Sunnyvale
  • Santa Clara
  • Palo Alto

As well as the even greater metro area of:

  • Bay Area
  • San Francisco Bay Area

Which names you use and how often you use them depend upon two primary things:

  • How often do the location names show up in searches
  • How many businesses are located within the location

For example, I would not use “Atherton” because while it is one of the wealthiest cities in America, the overall population is small, but even more importantly, there are very few businesses in Atherton and therefore very few potential clients of ours.
