More Important SEO Formatting for Blog Posts

While well formed titles for your blog posts are critical for good SEO, there is more blog post formatting you need to attend to, and these other aspects are the focus of this post.

The additional things you must do to every post are:

Insert a Relevant Image

For your average website, image searches account for at least 10% of all organic search visitors. For website that sell things that are very visual (clothing, food, bathroom remodels, etc) image searches bring a much higher percentage of visitors.

A minimum of one image per post and each image requires:

  • A meaningful and short caption
  • Alt-text, which is a set of relevant but short descriptive phrases separated by commas
  • A description, which is a single paragrph describing the image and it’s relevance to the post

An Internal Link

Which is a link from the post being written to a different post on your website. Internal links provide authority in the same way that all links provide authority. Your site should contain some well researched, well written, and informative posts known as “pillar posts“.

The pillar posts are then supported or linked to by “snippet posts” which are shorter, convey one main point or answer one question, and are published much more frequently.

Through the process your snippet posts give authority to your pillar posts.

An External Link

External links show places where your readers can continue to learn more. All things being equal, sites that link to external resources (other sites) rank higher than sites that don’t. Every post must contain at least one external link. Do not get carried away. If you need more than one, you certainly never need more than three.
