Does the use of social media improve your website search ranking?
The short answer is yes and of course the next question is; how?

Some social media sites are indexed by the Googlbots and have the attribute “nofollow” turned off.
For these sites, everything you post that also contains a link to a post on your site creates a back link which the Googlebots will find. You want this.
Which ones do this? The only ones I know for sure that do this are twitter and Meetup. Others may but I’m not certain. When using twitter be sure to shorten the URL via tinyurl or some other similar service.
If you write good stuff that people are genuinely interested in (as you should) when you share your content with your social circle, the good stuff gets referenced and shared. As it gets referenced and shared, you get back links.
Which Social Media Networking site helps best?
