Optimizing your site for local organic search does NOT harm your efforts to rank nationally.

Via Google Places for Business, you are limited to listing for where you actually have locations, but for organic search this is not a restriction.

When you optimize your site for “Bay Area Local SEO Marketing” you are not un-optimizing for “Local SEO Marketing”, you are simply creating more combinations for which your site will rank.

Ranking locally is an example of narrowing your niche, and when you narrow your niche, you decrease competition as there is less, and (this is the good part) you lay the foundation for later attracting a larger audience.

No matter how local you try to be, your website will never just attract visitors from your service area. Your goal with local SEO marketing is to attract as high a percentage of local visitors as you can. If you get to where 1/3 of your visitors are from your local service area, you’re doing great.

The main take away here is while you’re attracting your local audience, start thinking of ways you can be of service to people who live far away, as they will start contacting you.

If you sell products you can ship them.

What about if you sell local services (landscaping for example)? Then what? Can you make arrangements with other landscape professionals in other cities where you receive a referral fee for providing them a quality prospect?
