Knowing Your SEO (Inbound Marketing) is Done Ethically Using White Hat Techniques

Do We Need an SEO Code of Ethics?

Yes and no.

Yes, an SEO code of ethics will make it easy for consumers to know if the digital marketing companies they hire doing things in a way that will hurt their rankings (perhaps now, perhaps later).

No, an SEO code of ethics makes no sense because independent of what it says, Google makes the rules anyway.

I know giving opposing answers at the same time seems contradictory, but in this case the answer really is yes and no.

Yes, We Need an SEO Code of Ethics

Right now, most businesses who buy SEO services have no idea how the digital agencies they hire do what they do. They trust things are being done correctly and ethically, but they have no frame of reference for knowing if that is or is not true.

No, An SEO Code of Ethics is Irrelevant Since Google Makes the Rules

If the entire industry gets together and drafts an SEO Code of Ethics, but Google’s algorithm operates under different rules, then what good is that code?

Like it or not, Google makes the rules of Internet search.

If you have an issue with that I ask that you hold your nose and find a way to get over it.

Conclusion

An SEO code of ethics will be a good thing (I like it’s inevitable) as it will provide a common frame of reference between vendors and consumers of their services. I also expect Google will participate heavily and will probably dominate the discussion. This will be another opportunity for Google to tell us all what we need to do and how we need to do it. We may even listen this time.

However, I recommend you spend no time worrying about or even thinking about this.

Let those people who really think this is necessary hammer this out, and in the meantime keep publishing.
