This post focuses on the importance of choosing category names for your website that is search friendly.
I choose to assume your Inbound Marketing effort is based on a WordPress website, and there are reasons discussed in a different post as to why this is true.
To provide a point of reference, within your WordPress dashboard, you set your website categories at Posts -> Categories.
When you create your Categories, do not forget to make one of YOUR categories the default category (Settings -> Writing), then delete the Category named Unclassified (back to Posts -> Categories).
People like cute category names. Search engines don’t.
Each category should be two or three words and should describe what the posts in that category will be about and there should be no more than 12 categories.
Take this website for example.
The categories on this website are:
- Inbound Marketing (which is the default category of this website)
- Lead Generation
- Local SEO Marketing
- Social Media Marketing
Why do those words make sense? Because those are words that real people enter into real search engines.
How do I know this? I do keyword analysis using two tools:
- The Google Adwords keyword tool (this is free)
- Market Samurai (which is a $149 tool I purchased)
When you use category names that provide search advantages, your website is more likely to match more and different searches.
