This post is part of a series about the Internet marketing strategy I call Inbound Marketing, as well as part of a sub-series on the technical aspects of Inbound marketing. This post is also part of another sub-series that provides information about the specific WordPress plugins I find to be useful to Inbound Marketing.

Zippe.biz helps you generate quality leads for your business through your website.

I’ve heard people use the term sitemap when they refer to a websites menu structure. In that use of the word, it’s a listing of what posts line to what posts.

However from a search perspective, a sitemap is something very different.

The sitemap (your WordPress website should have one) is an XML file titled sitemap.xml.

It is a listing of every web page on your web server.

Why do you need this? Because when Google and the other search engine bots come to crawl your web site, one of the first things they do, if not the very first thing, is to look for a file named sitemap.xml, which makes their job of crawling your site easier.

This the SEO benefit.

With WordPress it is really easy to create a sitemap.xml file that is updated every time your website is updated. You do this by using a plugin designed for that purpose.

Although there are many to choose from, the one I’ve come to like is Google XML Sitemaps v3 for qTranslate.

To create your site map, you do the following:

  1. Login to your WordPress dashboard.
  2. Select “Add New” from the top of the page.
  3. Search for “google xml sitemap v3 for qTranslate”
  4. Select “Install” then follow the prompts until it is installed and activated.

You’re NOT done:

  1. Select “Settings -> XML-Sitemap” from the menu on the left of the screen.
  2. Find and select the link that builds your sitemap for the first time.

Even now you’re only mostly done.

The next step is to submit the Sitemap to Google via Google Webmasters Tools, which is explained in a different post (select the link earlier in this sentence).
