Your sales funnel is the decision making process people go through in the course of becoming aware of, learning more about, and ultimately buying your products and services.

Although you hear phrases like “create your sales funnel”, the phrase I think is most accurate is “understand your sales funnel“.

You have one whether you realize it or now. Your customers did, in fact, go through a decision-making process in the course of becoming your customers.

When you want to know what it is, a good plan is to ask a few. If for whatever reason that’s not possible (maybe you’re a brand new business and don’t have any clients yet), then put yourself in the shoes of a prospect. If you were to buy what you’re trying to sell, how would you go about it?

  • How would you learn about options?
  • How would you research them?
  • How would you compare them?
  • How would you select one?
  • How would you do your cost/benefit analysis (we all do this however quickly)?
  • What makes you decide to buy?

Then talk to a few of your friends and ask them the same.

Once you have a good idea of how people decide to buy what you’re selling, write it down.

That is your sales funnel.
