It frustrates me to stumble across articles on the web that give Local SEO Marketing advise that will provide little benefit.
Unfortunately I see this every day. The article I’m linking to in the first sentence of this post is not wrong in anyway. Yet it focuses your efforts on activities that provide little return.
When you want your website to rank high, you need to publish! You need to generate original and useful content.

All the other activities provide some benefit, but if you do them without continual publishing, you will not see the local SEO marketing benefit you want.
In the world of search marketing, there are a few terms used to describe how ethical your activities are:
Black Hat: Tasks that are considered outright tricks
Grey Hat: Tasks that are may be acceptable but may not
White Hat: Tasks that are clearly on the up and up and which Google and the other search engines consider to be OK
Rather than me itemizing black hat and grey hat activities, let me focus on the two single most important things you can do.
Publish Good Stuff
The #1 task is for you to publish useful and interesting stuff on your website. Stuff that real people get real value out of. Be prepared to publish A LOT and to keep publishing until sufficient numbers of visitors show up (what is sufficient varies from business to business and situation to situation). This content should be published on your website, and no where else.
The best way to encourage back links is to publish content on the websites of other people. This is generally called guest posting. Offer to write good and useful posts for others, and in exchange link to back to a post of yours which you wish to rank higher.
