Inbound Marketing: How to Increase Blog Traffic for Articles Published on Your Website

How to Increase Blog Traffic

This post is in direct response to a question I saw posted in a small business forum about marketing. The person published a variety of posts that are relevant to people at different phases of the purchasing process:

  • Initial awareness
  • Information gathering
  • More detailed research
  • Finalizing options
  • Etc

Their initial traffic was “amazing” but later on tapered down.

Why does this happen?

Knowing what I know about their story, it’s most likely their traffic levels fell off because they stopped posting new articles.

All things being equal (and I know that’s never the case), sites that are updated more often rank higher. Plain and simple.

Some people initially update their site often as they have a list of topics they wish to cover. Once they’re done with that list they stop updating.

When you stop updating, Google (not right away, but over time) lowers that ranking of your site.

The fix is easy. Keep publishing.

This usually takes people to another question or issue, and that is what to publish.

This is where you have to change your thinking.

It’s not a website so much as a publication.

The basic idea behind any publication is you publish articles and stories you think your desired audience will be interested in, and through this process you  attract and grow your  audience.

Think of your favorite magazine or newspaper. How do they know what to publish?

The answer is they’re constantly searching for stories. I literally keep a small pocket notebook near me and when an idea pops into my mind I write it down.

I also monitor forums periodically and see what questions people are asking. I then answer that question via a blog post.

To keep publishing, think like a reporter

When you think of your website as a publication that needs a steady steam of articles and stories, your task changes.

Give it a try, see how it works for you.
