Inbound Marketing: Do Keywords Still Matter for Search Engine Optimization?

Google has stated very strongly that effective the Hummingbird algorithm update, keyword phrases have been obsoleted by ideas and concepts.

However, I did a little experimenting and testing and it seems this is not as true as the trade press says.

My experiments were small, but the results seem pretty strong.

What I did was to structure a variety of queries about similar ideas and concepts, but using different words.

For example:

Query #1: the value of keywords to online commerce

Query #2: the value of ideas and concepts to online commerce

When you compare the SERPs you see the results are drastically different.

I did around a dozen of these experiments. What I was looking for was some similar entries in the search results. I never saw any.

So while ideas and concepts may obsolete the use of keyword phrases in the future, it’s not happening yet.

When you consider the Hummingbird update was first rolled out about 16 months ago, it seems the transition is very slow.

The Conclusion: To Focus on Keyword Phrases?

My somewhat informal experiment tells me very strongly the statements in the trade press about the demise of keyword phrases and keyword research (which I myself bought into and reported upon on this very website) are premature.

The next question of course is what tool or tools provides the best keyword research data?

I’ve stopped using Market Samurai, a tool I swore by as recently as 2 years ago. I’ll research this later and get back to you.

While Inbound Marketing is all about publishing, keywords still matter.
