What made Google better than every other search engine in existence at the time, was their recognition that links between webpages was a great indicator of the quality of the webpage.

In the very beginning there was only one search signal, and it was links. Today there are 220+ search signals, and links is one of the most important, if not THE most important still.

Building links needs to be party of your ranking strategy. But building links take both time and a focused strategy.

How do you build links for your business? Simple answer: have great content.

Creating a link-building plan

Make sure your landing pages are optimized properly, link your content to your landing pages (usually through calls to action), then create content on your site worthy of being linked to.

Understand what content people mostly read on your website to help you understand what future content to create.

Getting tactical

Now that you have a nice business website and content, there are 2 ways in which you can develop your links.

One-to-one outreach, this includes the use of emails and phone calls to reach to people at other websites to discuss content on your site their readers might benefit from.

Broadcast outreach this includes the creation and sharing of your website content widely, via social media, and email newsletters, that provides opportunities for other to see the value of your content.

Like any other online marketing strategy in your small business, track your link building to see what is working and what is not working.

Google Webmasters Tools provides a means to know what inbound links exist for your site, and there are commercial link trackers as well.

To those of us who don’t work at Google, Google seems to work in mysterious ways, but a few fundamentals have never changed.
