Do you sometimes search for your small business online? It’s pleasurable to see positive mentions.

But one day you get results that are negative. It happens to the best of us. Imagine seeing people talking about a bad  experience with your small business.

Some people fear this situation but it’s not all bad. Bad reviews on your business does not necessarily mean your business is bad.

How you respond matters

First off, you must respond.

Responding to a negative review shows how you approach your customers and how much you care about them, but the most significant thing about negative online reviews is how you handle them.

Assume the false and inappropriate reviews

It’s very important to check on the origin of your reviews before you respond to them. If you come across reviews that are actually false written with malicious intent, say so in your response.

There is an interesting lawsuit in process right now about a negative review on Yelp.

A lawyer in California claims that a review someone left on Yelp about her business contains lies. She asked the person to remove the lies. They did not. She sued Yelp to have them remove the lies. They did not.

Yelp claims if they are required to remove the negative review this will inhibit people from leaving negative reviews about businesses. The lawyer who filed the claim says she merely wants the review containing lies to be removed.

So if someone tells lies about your business, say so in your response.

But be polite.

Answer negative reviews publicly

Elaborate issues with your client publicly to show your potential customers that you are able to handle issues in your market space.

Be a good listener and make necessary adjustments

When people complain about something about your business, do not just respond that you are going to make changes. Be sure to provide a specific solution as soon as possible.
