Your Online Marketing Has a Hub

And everything else you do supports that hub.

You don’t get to choose the hub (actually I guess you do, but if you choose wrong you’ll regret it) and your preference as to what the hub should be is irrelevant.

The hub of your online marketing, including your social media marketing, needs to be your blog, on your website, under your domain name.

Why?

Because the best prospects are the ones who find you, and by supporting the hub (your blog) with everything else you do you raise its search ranking.

The best website visitor is one who shows up because they did an Internet search, and your website looked good.

How does Social Media Relate to Your Blog?

First I’ll talk a little about what are called Search Signals, which are factors Google takes into account when ranking websites.

Two very important search signals are:’

  1. What websites link to yours.
  2. How often is your website updated?

Social media marketing helps you initially “cast a wider net” so your blog posts are seen by more people. Assuming what you’ve written is interesting and useful, the more people who know about your stuff the more likely you are to attract links and comments.

Social media marketing helps to “prime the pump” of your SEO when your website or blog is new.

I say CAN because if you’ve published crap, no one will link to it.

Social Media Marketing CAN Provide You With Comments

I again use the word CAN for the same reason.

This one is less obvious to people, so allow me to explain.

When you publish a blog post, that is an update to your website. When someone leaves a comment on a post, that is another update. When you respond to their comment, that is yet another update. So discussions on blog posts are updates to your website which from an SEO perspective is very good.
