I’m Kevin with Inbound Marketing University and today’s Inbound Marketing Minute is about small business Do It Yourself SEO, or more accurately do it yourself Inbound Marketing.

SEO or Search Engine Optimization refers to the technical aspects of making a website easy to crawl and easy to index.

It has to do with:

  • Making sure your robots.txt file is right
  • Your sitemap.xml file exists and is updated
  • Your website title and tagline are SEO friendly
  • You have SEO friendly blog categories
  • The per post meta data, the SEO title and the meta description are properly set
  • And all that kind of stuff.

There are lots of those little details.

When you use WordPress those details are setup on your behalf and you don’t have to think about it, but they still gotta be done right.

However the days when you could go into the back end of a relative static and small website and get that website to rank are over.

What’s needed today is to publish content to your website that your desired audience finds interesting and most importantly useful.

And the economic problem with small business SEO is when you hire a company to do it for you, and you pay in the range that small business SEO packages typically cost, $300 a month to $800 a month, $1,000 a month depending on the size of your website.

That doesn’t buy the generation of enough content for this to work in any reasonable amount of time.

I’m assuming you want this to work in months, rather than years.

So as a small business with limited time, money, and energy, it’s necessary to find a way to do it yourself if you want to be effective without breaking the bank.
