With so many success stories on the Internet about marketing automation, you probably think that by just purchasing an automation tool everything will work well.

But the truth is that your marketing automation tool will perform poorly if it is implemented poorly.

As with all tools, marketing automation tools can only be as good as their use permits.

Many small businesses mishandle their marketing automation efforts and lose quality leads. The following are some common mistakes that small businesses do that threatens their marketing automation efforts.

Trying to master everything

Marketing automation is complex. Marketers think they can quickly set up a marketing program and it then runs on autopilot. However, to be successful with marketing automation, take time with each step and understand it before moving on to the next step.

In the long run, a well thought out but slower implementation helps you sell more than something you put together quickly but do poorly.

Producing weak content

Audience interest is gained through valuable and informative content. If you are not giving out informative content then you are blowing it. Creating content for the sake of creating content will not generate leads. And generating useful content is not as hard as you may think. It doesn’t need to be fancy or excessively pretty. It does need to answer questions and provide value.

Content is the fuel of marketing automation and it should be targeted to your desired audience, your potential customers, and focused on the various stages of your sales funnel.

To be successful on this, you must have a strong content strategy.

Using the same marketing habits

Using the same marketing habits of “just” sending emails will cost your marketing efforts. While marketing automation is more difficult to setup, it works so much better than either email newsletters or email auto responders.
