Why Is It So Hard to Rate Small Business Online Marketing Services?

Internet Marketing is Incredibly Measurable

Even with the free version of Google Analytics, it is possible to report on Online Marketing detail and trends from a lot of different perspectives.

Yet considering how measurable it is, small business Internet marketing services (and consultants) rarely publish specific results showing what they’ve done for their clients.

I can only guess at this is, which I’m about to do.

SEO firms and consultants approach small businesses with the pitch that achieving a first page ranking on Google is important, quick, and simple.

There are many problems with that pitch.

The inconvenient truth about SEO is that Google maintains their usefulness by serving up search results that in turn are useful.

So if you want Google to rank you high in their search results, you need to publish a repository of webpages that are in fact useful.

SEO tricks don’t do it.

Myth: You Should Covet the First Page Ranking

Even a fairly young website ranks for hundreds of different phrases, and phrase ranks at it’s level. Your website ranks for some phrases on page 87. For other phrases on page 3. And for other phrases on page 1.

If an SEO agency is able to rank you on page 1 for a phrase that hardly anybody searches for, have they really done you any good?

Myth: First Page Ranking is Quick

This is flat out not true. A first page ranking takes time and effort. You publish quality stuff and you keep doing it. As you publish more and more, over time your website ranking rises.

Myth: First Page Ranking is Simple

On one level this is true. The system you follow is conceptually simple:

  • Publish useful posts every day.
  • Format them properly for SEO.
  • Keep doing it.

What makes it hard is doing that is hard. It takes time, energy, focus, and diligence.

The single most important factor in determine SEO success is perseverance, which is very closely related to commitment.

So Why Don’t Small Business SEO Agencies Publish Their Results?

I’m guessing it’s because their results don’t measure up to the promises they make.
