To Win in SEO, You Give Google Want They Want

Since you want your small business search engine optimization techniques to produce results, the next question you ask is, What does Google want?

The surprising thing about that question is very few people seem to know in spite of the fact that Google tells us over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and you get the point.

The sentence below is taken from the “Ten things we know to be true” page from the Google website.

Since the beginning, we’ve focused on providing the best user experience possible.

 

The sentence below is taken from the Google Search Quality Rating Guidelines. Page 13, section 4.2.

A rating of useful is assigned to pages that are very helpful for most users.

Google Has a Webpage Quality Rating Scale

Google rates webpages per the following rating scale:

  1. Vital (a rating reserved almost exclusively for official webpages associated with individuals or organizations).
  2. Useful
  3. Relevant
  4. Slightly Relevant
  5. Useless

Do you see a pattern?

Google Wants Webpages That Are USEFUL!

Makes sense? Doesn’t it?

Google derives almost all their revenue from advertising. In order to make money from advertising, they need an audience. In that, they are just like radio, TV, newspapers, and magazines.

However Google is a search engine. So how does a search engine gather and grow an audience?

By providing search results that are “better” than those produced by other search engines.

Someone a long time ago decided that “better” means “more useful”. I for one think it was a good call.
