First, Understand Content Marketing is Not SEO

While Content Marketing and SEO are different things, it’s not an either or situation. You need both.

Content is articles, stories, videos, infographics, etc that appeal to people. SEO is the means if making it easy for the search engines to find it, index it, and rank it.

The fact that Content Marketing and SEO are different things makes the headline not technically incorrect, but you get my point.

Content Marketing is…..

The publishing of content, in various formats (articles, research papers, eBooks, videos, infographics, etc), mostly to your website, for purposes of turning your website into a repository of information your desired audience will find interesting and useful.

SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is…..

The formatting of your website (over all) and the formatting of individual web pages, to make it easy for the search engine software robots to find, index, and rank your webpages.

You Need Both, And More…..

From a content perspective, what’s important is that you write for people, and format for search engines.

This “striking the balance” is another form of “optimizing” your website.

However, this is not enough.

Being Found Requires Having Been Found

And this is the more.

Being found creates more views which increases your SEO ranking, which gets you found more, which creates more views, etc, etc.

So what’s a brand new and small business to do?

Find people to find your site.

In SEO terms, “find” has specific meanings:

  • Link to your web posts
  • Comment upon your blog posts
  • Share your pages and posts via social media

This is where community comes in. The best way to “kick start” your SEO ranking is to join a community of people who find each other (as defined above) to help each other.
