target customer? ideal customer? who do you sell to?

Small Business Marketing Strategy Question: Who Do You Sell To?

Who Do You Sell To? Be Specific

This is the same question as “Who is your ideal customer?“, but reworded for a slightly different perspective. Ideal is a rather abstract concept. To make it more concrete think of who does (or is most likely to) give you money in exchange for your goods and services.

The first thing to understand is nobody sells to:

  • Everybody
  • All [fill in the blank]

To illustrate this point, I’ll talk about this business, Inbound Marketing University.

Inbound Marketing University

Why we exist

To bring the power of Inbound Marketing to small businesses and early stage startups who can not afford to hire a quality agency.

What we sell

Business transformation through Inbound Marketing Training

Who we sell to

The owners or the person within the business directly responsible for marketing. People who understand the value of and are willing to put in sweat equity to get results.

Why Does This Matter

In order to attract the right people, both online and offline, you need to know who you’re talking to. You also don’t want to spend too much time selling to people who are not likely to buy.
