When Google announces they are clamping down on practices such as guest blogging as a mean to acquire back links, what they really mean (and Matt Cutts says so) is they are clamping down on ways of acquire back links they consider to be SPAM or cheating.

Link building is both necessary and appropriate.

However…. do it via acceptable (white hat) methods.

Your Inbound Marketing Success Requires Both Content and Links

And those are two very different skill sets. One person can do both and in smaller companies one person will do both.

Content generation is a somewhat solitary activity. Maybe other people help you find ideas for stories, but doing research, writing, scheduling, etc is done most often by one person working alone.

Link building on the other hand is the ultimate in “social marketing”. It requires finding people, talking to people, exchanging emails, LinkedIn messages, etc, etc and establishing some form of relationship with people, however light that relationship might be.

As you do more link building, you will get to know the people you link build with. You will come to help each other.

What Skills Does a Link Builder Need?

The ability to determine who they wish to approach.

The ability to approach strangers (either face to face or via the Internet).

The ability to handle rejection (some people will blow you off).

The ability to be proactive and to persist (both Content Generation and Link Building share this one).
