How to improve your SEO using social media marketing.

Small business owners tend to think of Search engine optimization as being all about content and keywords.

While these are both relevant, they are not ALL that matters.

This post focuses on the use of social media marketing to improve your Search Engine Optimization.

The most important point here is that social media plays a supporting role when it comes to SEO.

Social media (with one specific exception for Google+) doesn’t influence search results directly, but influences things that do.

Google gives ranking preference to websites that:

  1. Are updated more often.
  2. Are linked to more.

Promoting your posts via social media exposes them to more people, some of whom will comment upon them and some of whom will link to them. That is how social media plays a supporting role to SEO.

Boosting SEO using social media marketing strategies involves the following

Share your best stuff and make that stuff good

You don’t need to and perhaps should not share every blog post. Some are “just” OK, so don’t share them. Share the ones you’re most proud of.

But when you do share them, make sure they contain a title that is likely to appeal to people (use the CoSchedule Headline Analyzer to score your headlines), and include a relevant image.

Encourage people to share your post

For small businesses, posts shared on social networks helps in boosting your Search Engine Optimization efforts as described above.

Why not ask people to like, share, and re-tweet your social post? Some will.

Ask people what they think

And encourage them to comment on the blog post, not the social media update. This means your request to comment is at the bottom of the blog post, not in the social media update.
