Attracting huge traffic to your website takes time, energy, focus, and money.

How do I get huge traffic for my website and how should I market?

An important follow up question relative to traffic to your website is how huge is huge?

The question was posted by someone who a built a marketplace website for freelancing.

His main problem is he is in a very crowded competitive market.

So his options are:

  1. Spend a massive amount of money to out-publish his competitors, or
  2. Find a specialized niche they’re ignoring which he can exploit.

Obtaining a high search engine ranking, and therefore attracting traffic through organic search is a matter of publishing.

Have you noticed that pretty much whatever you search for, online magazines and newspapers (even industry specific ones) tend to outrank business blogs?

There is a reason this happens.

What search engines “like” or perhaps more accurately what they rank high are sites that:

  1. Have a lot of content.
  2. Have good content that provides real and useful answers.
  3. Are updated often, preferably multiple times each day.
  4. Have been around a while.

To rank your website you need to become an online magazine, even if you do so on a small scale.

And that is where the second option comes in.

If you wanted to outrank hgtv.com for the phrase “bathroom remodeling” you can by out publishing hgtv.com. The problem is out publishing them will be very expensive.

The same is true of “coffee” and Starbucks.

People who have carved out a large niche on the Internet have a definite advantage. See the four main criteria for being found listed above.

Since you probably can’t out compete them head to head in that main niche, you have no choice but to find an angle they’re ignoring.

To return to my initial question of how huge is huge, are you trying to displace the biggest company in the industry or to find and fill a niche they’re ignoring? That is what determines how huge is huge.
