Do you need to focus on keywords to achieve SEO success?

Can I use two keywords in one same title tag or would that be over optimization?

Absolutely!

If using two keywords (or keyword phrases) in one title is natural, by all means do it.

Keyword over optimization is not a function of what goes into a post title, but rather is a function of what goes into the post in it’s entirety.

The image above this post is intended to be humorous, but it makes the point well. The keyword “keyword” is used excessively and in ways that do not occur naturally in the way people speak or the way people write.

Keyword Phrase Use Rule #1

Within your post, post title, post secondary title (seo meta data title tag), post body, image caption, image alt text, image description, etc, etc write the way you would write if you were writing for a person.

Do not write for search engines.

Write for people and format for search engines.

Keyword Phrase Use Rule #2

This rule is specifically for titles. An ideal title is no more than 70 characters, is a natural language title, uses as many different strong keyword phrases as you can (strong phrases are ones with a high search volume and preferably a low level of competition) and no words are repeated.

Using this rule creates titles that match for more than one keyword phrase and increases the odds of the post matching search queries by increasing the number of word combinations it matches.

Keyword Phrase Use Rule #3

When you’ve written a post and post title that sounds natural and is the way you speak and write to people, it’s fine.

On the other hand, if you look at a title or an entire post and you feel in your gut it’s over optimized, it probably is.
