Hello.

I’m Kevin Carney of Inbound Marketing University.

Today’s Inbound Marketing Minute is about the growing Digital Marketing Divide.

The digital marketing divide is being created or perhaps has been created by the increasing cost required to have your website rank high in the search engines, predominantly Google.

As recently as 3 years ago a relatively static small business website could by made to rank high by going in and SEO optimizing all of the individual pages even though there were relatively few of them.

In the ensuing three years the Internet has gotten more crowded, almost every type of business – ever business niche has gotten more competitive, and Google has updated their algorithm several times. You hear about the big ones, but Google does ore than 400 algorithm updates every year.

And Google is driving us towards what ranks is content that is useful to the desired audience.

And there are some aspects of what it takes to rank now that did not used to be true.

Websites with more content rank higher. Websites that are updated more often rank higher.

So today if you want your website to rank you need to generate a steady stream of fresh, relevant, and most importantly useful content (useful that is to your desired audience) and you need to keep doing that on a regular basis.

You need to in a sense become a publisher and view your website as an online magazine catering to your industry niche.

And that’s more expensive than what those small business SEO packages once cost.

This is what I call the Digital Marketing Divide.

If you can afford to do that you can have a website that ranks. If you can’t you’re kind of stuck.

Most small businesses can not afford to hire out an agency to do that for them, so most small businesses need to learn to do that for themselves.

And the good news is anyone can learn to do it. It’s not rocket science.
