How should you prioritize your small business online marketing efforts?

Hello.

I’m Kevin Carney of Inbound Marketing University.

Today’s Inbound Marketing Minute addresses the question of… as a small business owner with limited time, money, and energy, where should you devote your energies, your time, money, and energy, relative to online marketing.

And there is a definite order in which it makes sense to do thing.

So, first and foremost, the center of all of your online marketing activities needs to be your blog, on your website, under your URL.

And I’ll go one step farther and say “Make it WordPress”, but that’s addressed in a different video so I won’t elaborate on that here.

And the reason it needs to be your blog and your website under your URL is that’s the only place on the entire Internet where nobody can change the rules on you.

So when your primary platform is Facebook and/or LinkedIn, and you put a lot of effort into developing followers and you got it down, and then they change the rules… they can undo (and sometimes do)…. undo overnight what you spent years building up.

OK, number 2 is email.

These infamous studies that show things shows that what brings in the money is attracting people through organic search, and staying in touch through email.

So even if your email list is relatively small, get an email list. You can start with the free one at Mailchimp, the free service at Mailchimp, and then put a form on your website to capture email addresses and figure out something you can offer them in exchange.

And start gathering email addresses.

Third are social media sites where the social media updates are indexed by Google.

And the ones where I know for sure this happens are Google+, Twitter, Instagram, and the long posts on LinkedIn.

I believe the LinkedIn short updates are not indexed, but the long ones are.

So again, Google+, Instagram, Twitter, and LinkedIn long posts are all indexed by Google.

And then last but not least, if you have time, money, and energy left over, you can focus on the social media sites which are not indexed by Google.

I don’t have a definitive list of which ones they are, but you can do a couple of experiments by searching on Google and see if like a Facebook update that you made got indexed.

If you can’t find it, it probably didn’t.

So to summarize, priority number 1 is your blog on your website under your URL, where you publish original content which is interesting and useful to your desired audience.

Number 2 is email. Get the mechanism put in place and start capturing addresses.

Number 3 is social media sites where Google indexes the social media updates.

And number 4 is social media sites where Google doesn’t.
