While Content Marketing seems to be different things to different people, there are ways of doing it that work better than others. That generate more traffic and more leads.

There are certain core concepts you must get to make this work.

The world is not short of content. Quite the contrary. We’re drowning in it. Most of it is crap, and that is the key concept here.

While some of what you must do is technical, THE key element of SEO success is being a trustworthy source of quality content.

Below we cover four prerequisites of content marketing for small businesses.

Your content must be mobile friendly

This is one of the technical aspects.

The number of people using smartphones is rising and as smartphone users continue to increase, so does mobile content consumption (and possibly content consumption in general).

Google has announced they are splitting their index into mobile friendly, and other, and they will be looking for matches in the mobile friendly index first.

Therefore, your content must be mobile-friendly for a successful content marketing strategy.

User focused content

Create content for your audience. With every piece of content you create, have your audience in mind.

What questions do they have? What issues are they trying to solve?

In terms of format, the following are some types of content that work well.

  • How to content – be as detailed as if appropriate to be of value
  • Research and insights
  • Case studies  / success stories
  • Info graphics

Your content should load quickly, and be easy to navigate.

As much as you need new customers, also create content for your existing customers.

Long enough, but not too long

We all have too much to read these days. Keep that in mind. Provide answers, not content per se.

Keep your content concise. Use real-world examples to get your points across. Be as specific as you can.

The primary use of content is to attract an audience (to promote goodwill). You do NOT just create to make sales, but by growing an audience you do create sales.

Be human (not boring) and let your personality shine through the content you create.
